Dr. Suman Raj Bista is a Co-founder of the Nepal Applied Mathematics and Informatics Institute for Research (NAAMII) and Co-leader of its MAP-MED Lab, where he serves as a Research Scientist. He is also a Co-founder and Advising Scientist at diyo.ai.

Previously, he was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Australian Centre for Robotic Vision, Queensland University of Technology (QUT), Australia. He worked with Prof. Peter Corke on computer vision, autonomous navigation, and visual recognition for humanoid robots, particularly the Pepper robot from SoftBank Robotics. He also worked with Prof. Niko Sünderhauf on robotic vision benchmarking, contributing to the Robotic Vision Challenges and BenchBot projects for evaluating scene understanding and robotic perception in simulated and real-world environments.

He earned his PhD in 2016 from INRIA Rennes–Bretagne Atlantique, France, under the supervision of Dr. François Chaumette and Dr. Paolo Robuffo Giordano, focusing on vision-based autonomous robot navigation. He holds a Master's degree in Computer Vision from the University of Burgundy, France (2013), and a Bachelor's degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering from Pulchowk Campus, Tribhuvan University, Nepal (2009).

Dr. Bista has also served as a part-time Lecturer at Pulchowk Campus and Course Coordinator for Deep Learning for Visual Intelligence at Thapathali Campus, both under the Institute of Engineering, Tribhuvan University.

His research spans computer vision, robotics, optimisation, and artificial intelligence, with a current focus on medical image analysis and AI-assisted orthopaedic surgical planning, translating AI research into clinically applicable technologies.
