Building the foundational layer of AI capability

NAAMII's AI training program for working and thinking fluidly with AI

The five practices of AI nativity, arranged around a wheel: Problem-Based Learning, AI as a Cognitive Partner, Efficient Workflow, Judgment and Decision-Making, and Responsible Use.

The Framework

The AI Skills Pyramid

Capability isn't the same at every level of an organization, and training shouldn't be either. NAAMII's research describes AI capability as three categories targeting different audiences: AI Native, Foundational, and Deep, not as a ladder.

A pyramid with three tiers: AI Deep Skills for specialists at the top, Foundational AI Skills for role-specific builders in the middle, and Native AI Skills as the universal base.

Why start at the base

A pyramid needs a wide foundation to hold up a narrow peak. An AI-ready workforce needs broad, native capability before it needs specialists or system builders. That base is what this programme provides.

Khatri, A., & Khanal, B. (2026). The AI Pyramid: A Conceptual Framework for Workforce Capability in the Age of AI. arXiv:2601.06500, research produced by NAAMII.

The Approach

We start with the problem, not the tool.

AI skills are practiced, not memorized. Each lesson opens with a real scenario; the concept is introduced only once the problem is understood.

Five-step learning cycle: Experience a real scenario, Observe the challenge, Discover the concept, Practice the skill, Apply it to real work.

The Curriculum

The framework, now in practice.

AI Native takes the base of the pyramid above and turns it into a running programme: training youths across Nepal in four connected skill areas.

The Format

AI Native: a nine-hour blended course.

Participants build shared understanding on their own first. The workshop turns it into practical, workplace capability.

The blended learning model: six hours of self-paced learning, followed by a three-hour instructor-led workshop.

01

Communicate with AI clearly enough to get useful, relevant results.

02

Structure work so AI can meaningfully take part in it.

03

Evaluate AI-generated output critically before relying on it.

04

Apply AI responsibly within their own organization.

Delivered Under UDAAN

Part of a longer-running effort.

UDAAN is NAAMII's wider programme for digital and AI skills in Nepal. AI Native is its AI-specific strand, alongside three related strands:

PATHSHALA

Digital skills in AI, coding, animation, and emerging technologies.

KARYASHALA

Innovation through hackathons, mentorship, and incubation.

KARMASHALA

Internships, fellowships, and career opportunities.

NITISHALA

Digital governance through policy engagement.
